Commissioner Tudravu issues warning over officer’s death

Commissioner Tudravu confirmed that post-mortem findings had established elements of foul play.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has issued a stern warning to whoever is responsible for the death of Police Constable Peniasi Racagi, saying they will face the full consequences of their actions.

“This is my message to whoever is responsible - Be warned that you will face the full consequence of your unlawful act.”

PC Racagi's body was found floating near the Lami Oceania Wesley Church early Sunday morning.

In a press conference today, Commissioner Tudravu confirmed that post-mortem findings had established elements of foul play in the death of the young officer.

“I would like to state that we are mourning, hurting and devastated by the tragic loss of a young officer whose promising policing career was tragically cut short.”

The Divisional Crime Officer Southern is leading the investigation in Lami. Police are gathering information to establish the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death and determine the motive.

“They are putting together the timeline of events from when he was last seen to the time the report was received on Sunday morning,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

He acknowledged public speculation about the motive and urged restraint.

“I understand that there is a lot of speculation regarding the motive. However, I plead with members of the public to trust the process of investigation and avoid spreading misinformation that will only create unnecessary panic.”

Commissioner Tudravu said he had directed investigators to keep an open mind and follow proper investigative procedures, with all available resources deployed to assist the team.

“I have directed the investigation team to have an open mind and to be guided by the principles of process of the conduct of investigations. I have also directed all available resources and assistance to be rendered to the investigation team.”

He also thanked members of the public for their support during what he described as a difficult time for the Force.

“I am thankful for the outpouring support towards the Fiji Police Force during this difficult time.”

Commissioner Tudravu called on the community to assist police in bringing those responsible to justice.

“I ask members of the community to work with us and find whoever is responsible for this attack on an officer whose ambition to keep our community safe has unfortunately cost him dearly.”
