President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has called for a comprehensive review of the Constitution.

He also emphasised the need for a stronger partnership between traditional iTaukei institutions and the Government to drive sustainable national development.

Addressing lawmakers, faith leaders and civil society representatives today, Ratu Naiqama emphasised the importance of inclusive governance and active citizen participation in shaping the nation’s legal and institutional framework.

“Our Constitution must evolve to reflect the aspirations, values and realities of our people,” he said.

“This review will be guided by democratic principles, good governance and respect for the rule of law, ensuring that the voice of all Fijians is heard and respected.”

The President said constitutional reforms would protect national unity and fundamental rights while reinforcing public confidence in democratic institutions.

He said the process would include expert consultations, broad-based community engagement and transparent dialogue before any amendments are tabled in Parliament.

Ratu Naiqama also stressed the pivotal role of traditional leadership in national progress.

He called for stronger collaboration between Government and iTaukei institutions, particularly in managing land and natural resources, driving inclusive development and preserving cultural identity.

“Traditional leaders must provide vision, responsibility and unity, mobilising communities while ensuring that land and sea resources are used productively and sustainably,” he said.

“Aligned with national priorities, these resources form the foundation for resilience, dignity and shared prosperity.”
