Cook Island police call off search for Fijian

The Cook Islands Police has called off the search for Luke Vakayawa, who fell overboard from the inter-island ferry ‘Lady Moana’ on Sunday.
The ferry was returning to Rarotonga from Mangaia.
Police spokesperson Trevor Pitt said the lifebuoy was deployed when Vakayawa went overboard was found on Tuesday.

“The search and rescue operation was assessed in discussions between the maritime commander and the commissioner,” Mr Pitt said.
“It was agreed that the search and rescue be stood down, given that the patrol boat conducted a comprehensive search of the area where the man was missing.”

The 22-year-old is the youngest of seven siblings.
He moved to the Cook Islands in March 2023, and has worked for Taio Shipping for about a year.
His father, Vuli Vakayawa, who is also a seafarer said he was devastated when informed about what happened.
“I am devastated by what transpired in the seas between Mangaia and Rarotonga. The passage that once brought me so much joy now bears the weight of this heartbreaking loss,” Mr Vakayawa said.
“Despite my years of seafaring, this event has changed my relationship with the sea forever.”
Those who know Vuli described him as someone who rarely made his presence known unless necessary and seldom spoke unless asked a direct question. His quiet demeanor masked a deeply caring and dedicated spirit.
Legal counsel for the Board of Friends of Fiji (FOF), Lavi Rokoika, said an inquest pursuant to the Coroners Act would be conducted following the police investigation.
FOF is proactive in preparing to assist the Vakayawa family with the memorial service once they decide on the date.
Luke hailed from Vatoa Village in Ono-i-Lau with maternal links to Nukunuku Village in Lakeba, Lau.
