Durga Puja is one of the most important festivals for Hindus, especially in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Odisha, and other parts of India. It honours he goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

Mr Mehta highlighted the work of the Fiji Sevashram Sangh, praising Swami Sanyuktanand ji and the dedicated volunteers. The event coincided with Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Mr Mehta said Gandhi’s emphasis on seva (service) was reflected in the work of the Sangh.

“In India this year, we are observing Sewa Parv from September 17 to October 2, a campaign to promote service as a tool for nation-building. The work of the Sangh reflects the same values of seva that Gandhiji lived by,” he said.

The celebration also highlighted the close friendship between India and Fiji. “Fiji is a very important partner for India. Our bilateral ties are stronger than ever. But the real strength of India-Fiji relations is you all, the Indo-Fijian community,” he said.
