It has been two months since the tragic passing of Jonathan Lui, who lost his life following an alleged violent robbery after a vehicle accident.

On September 25, 2024, at about 8pm, the 24-year-old was involved in a car accident along Velau Drive, Kinoya, in Nasinu.

The vehicle he was operating reportedly veered-off the road.

According to his father, Ramanu Caladuadua, after the accident, Jonathan was allegedly attacked and robbed by bystanders while attempting to seek assistance.

The assailants remain unidentified. Mr Caladuadua claimed that when Jonathan was admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, there were visible marks of injuries on his body and head.

Jonathan died on December 10, 2024.

Call for Justice

Mr Caladuadua has urged Police to conduct a thorough investigation and hold accountable those responsible for his son’s death.

He said officers at the Valelevu Police Station had informed them that Jonathan’s case was closed due to a lack of evidence and witness.

Upon contacting the investigating officer at the station, she clarified that the case was not closed and that they were still in the process of gathering statements.

Questions sent to the Police Media Cell remained unanswered when this edition went to press.

“We are seeking closure and asking the police to identify those who harmed our Jonathan. If this could happen to him, it could happen to anyone,” Mr Caladuadua said.

“It seems there is a degree of negligence on the part of the police, as they continually informed us that the investigation is ongoing whenever we sought their assistance.

“Jonathan was unable to communicate from the moment of the accident and robbery, and now we are being told by the officers at Valelevu that his case has been closed.

“I feel that the police are not dedicating sufficient effort to achieve justice and closure for Jonathan’s family.”

Jonathan was the third eldest among five siblings.
