The first fully furnished Northern Fitness Centre and the Adi Laisa Children’s Park were handed over to Labasa Town Council last night.

These two projects were set up by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North from the proceeds of the annual festival held at Subrail Park in Labasa.

Festival committee president Ram Lingam said it cost $130,000 to build the centre in 2008 and $120,000 to set up the park in 2010.

“Following the discussion with the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar last month we decided to handover these two projects because Labasa Town Council is the legal owner of the land where the projects have been built,” Mr Lingam said.

“After this handing over the festival committee has been relieved of all its responsibilities and obligations and will not interfere in anyway.

“Since the festival’s existence in 2005, the committee has completed 20 projects in the Northern Division,” he added.

Mr Lingam saluted the leaders, who toiled hard and had the vision and compassion to remain focused, in their visionary mantra to take on and complete projects no one had done before.

Most projects benefited a large section of the Northern community.

Labasa Town Council accountant Seema Dutt, who accepted these two iconic projects by signing the agreement acknowledged the committee for doing these great projects and managing them so well during the past years.

“It is a great honour for the council to be part of festival of the Friendly North and working together hand in hand,” Mrs Dutt said.

“I believe this is the only fitness centre in operation and children’s park which is maintained so well.

“The council is giving assurance that workers will give our level best in maintaining the project and bring in more innovation to this project.”
