The Fiji Corrections Service has achieved a milestone as all members of the institution, except for one, being fully vaccinated.

The remaining officer is awaiting the second dose.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama congratulated the Fiji Corrections Service for achieving that along with two new capital projects.

A new inter-faith chapel self-funded by FCS officers and a new transport office funded and built by the Government.

“The former shows the commitment of the FCS to its communities of faith, and the bonds between its officers, and the latter shows the commitment of your government to the vital service you all offer the nation,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Effective institutions require both forms of commitment to function at their highest level.”

To fix up the chapel, FCS staff raised more than $140,000.

The new Transport Office situated across the Korovou Prison would be a new logistical hub for the FCS.

The office cost $142,245 to build.

Mr Bainimarama also spoke of a future project whereby half- million-dollars was allocated towards the construction of a new 600-capacity main cell block.

“I wouldn’t approve the building of a new cell block if I knew it wasn’t helping to address the root cause of criminality in Fiji,” he said.

“In Fiji, we know that a prison system is a failure if it does not rehabilitate those who carry out their sentences within it.”
