Government is working on identifying and developing 266 acres of land across the Central and Western divisions to build 3000 climate-resilient, Category 5 cyclone-resistance housing units.
This was revealed on Friday by the permanent secretary for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Shaheen Ali, during the Construction Industry Council Conference at the Fiji National University, Namaka Campus, in Nadi.
“The theme ‘Affordable Housing in Fiji’ could not be more relevant as we work together to ensure that housing is not just accessible but is a right for every Fijian,” Mr Ali said.

He said the construction industry was not just about bricks and mortar, but about building homes, creating communities, and ensuring that every Fijian had access to safe, secure, and affordable housing.
“We reaffirm our commitment to this essential goal which is crucial for the wel-being of our citizens and the growth of our economy.”
He said in line with the Fiji National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, Government was committed to revitalising the construction industry to increase its contribution to the economy and to ensure that no one is left behind when in housing.
Affordable housing
“As we all know, the demand for affordable housing in Fiji has increased. Rapid urbanisation and a younger demography bring complex challenges. But housing must remain a right, not a privilege. Together, we must find sustainable solutions to ensure all Fijians have access to affordable, quality housing,” Mr Ali said.
He said the housing sector’s contribution to Fiji’s GDP grew from 4.2 per cent in 2011 to 5.6 per cent in 2018, signaling its vital role.
“To continue this momentum, Government is committed to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly building solutions that align with global trends towards sustainability.”
He said that through a public-private partnership project, the Government and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) were working towards providing affordable, high-quality housing options.
