Five years of hard work paid-off for Shoheel Azhar Ali when he scooped the dux and outstanding student of the year awards during the Suva Muslim College prizegiving ceremony on Monday.

Ali, 18, was caught by surprise when he won the two best prizes of the year.

“I knew I was going to be the dux of the school, but to get the outstanding award was something I did not see coming,” Shoheel said.

“It’s all sinking in now and I’m just very happy because all the hard work had paid off.”

He attributed his achievements to the support of his teachers and from home.

The pure science student admitted his journey was far from easy.

“I watched a lot of animae (Japanese cartons) and movies to keep my mind in check and if there is anything that I’ve learnt from them, it’s no matter what odds are stacked against you, the wheels will have to keep on turning. You have to keep striving,” he said.

He encourages young people to remain optimistic when things do not work out the way they want them to.

“The five fingers on each of our hands are different in size so how I see it is if you don’t succeed in something, you will definitely excel at something else.

“Look at Elon Musk, typically the richest man in the world. He didn’t finish high school but he’s accomplished so much success. So, if you’re not exceling academically God has a plan for you.”
