A heavy rain warning remains in force for the Fiji group as an active trough of low pressure continues to affect the country, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi issued Special Weather Bulletin Number 16 at 4.30am today (March 3, 2026), warning of occasional to periods of rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms over most places.

The system, accompanied by active rain bands and strong northwesterly winds, is expected to gradually ease later today.

However, forecasters say localised heavy falls could still trigger flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

In the 24 hours between 4pm yesterday and 4am today, significant rainfall was recorded at:

  • Waikubukubu – 163mm
  • Tavua – 109.5mm
  • Nadarivatu – 100mm
  • Nayarabale – 96.5mm
  • Tubenassolo – 93mm

Authorities warn that flash flooding may affect informal settlements, communities and businesses in low-lying areas.

Irish crossings could become impassable, leading to traffic disruptions.

Surface flooding is also expected in urban areas with poor drainage, while wet roads and reduced visibility during heavy downpours could increase the risk of accidents.

Forecast confidence is rated moderate to high.

The next Special Weather Bulletin for heavy rain will be issued around 10.30am or earlier if necessary.
