Police are now treating the death of a young woman whose body was found in a sugarcane field in Korovuto, Nadi, as an alleged murder.

The body of Kolora Nasau Buli, 19, was discovered on December 28 along Mate Road. It is believed she sustained serious head injuries.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro yesterday confirmed that following ongoing inquiries and assessment of evidence gathered so far, the case has been reclassified.

“The case has been classified as an alleged murder,” Ms Naisoro said.

She said no arrests have been made, and investigations are continuing as police pursue all possible leads to establish the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death and identify those responsible.

The development has heightened concern among residents in the Nadi area, particularly those living near Mate Road in Korovuto.

Ms Buli’s body was discovered by a family returning from fishing at a nearby river.

Resident Margaret Agnes said her husband noticed what appeared to be blood along the grass as they walked through a track in the field and initially thought it was from an animal.

She said the blood trail led deeper into the sugarcane field, where they found a person lying on the ground.

Police said the body was partially decomposed at the time of discovery and that the face was badly damaged.

Investigations are ongoing.
