Labasa inmates target 11,000-tonne cane harvest

Fifty-two inmates working in Labasa’s sugarcane fields have been set a target of harvesting 11,000 tonnes of cane this year — almost three times the amount harvested last year.

The inmates are taking part in a Fiji Corrections Service rehabilitation programme in the Northern Division.

Supervisor Northern Isireli Nataqa said 4,000 tonnes of sugarcane were harvested last year.

He briefed Acting Commissioner of Corrections Auta Moceisuva on the progress of this year’s harvesting operation during a visit to Labasa on August 11.

Mr Moceisuva later met the inmates in the cane fields and encouraged them to work towards the 11,000-tonne target.

He said their work provided financial benefits for the inmates while contributing to economic activity through productive rehabilitation.

Mr Moceisuva urged the inmates to remain disciplined and make use of opportunities offered through Corrections rehabilitation programmes to prepare for their eventual reintegration into society.

He also warned them against becoming involved with contraband, particularly when returning to their respective correctional institutions, saying this could affect their rehabilitation.

During the visit, Mr Moceisuva spoke directly with the inmates and responded to questions and concerns they raised.

He was accompanied by Acting Assistant Commissioner of Corrections Operations Tuapati Kacivi and Chief Logistics Officer Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Ilisoni Ratumaikoro.
