Low condom use in Fiji has sparked concern within the Ministry of Health, which is grappling with a recent outbreak of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
The country’s population of 927,601 is witnessing an alarming trend, particularly among youths aged 15 to 25, who are most vulnerable to contracting these infections.
During the launch of the National Condom Campaign at the Suva Civic Centre on Friday, Assistant Minister for Health Penioni Ravunawa announced a strategic approach to address the crisis.

He revealed that 18 educational institutions, including 13 campuses of the Fiji National University and five facilities of the University of the South Pacific (USP), would be key partners in the campaign.
“Establishing a presence in our educational institutions is crucial,” Mr Ravunawa said.
“It allows our trained teams to engage with youths, equipping them not only with the tools to protect themselves but also with the knowledge to navigate their personal experiences safely and confidently.”
In addition to targeting schools and universities, the ministry is also turning its attention to the social settings that influence young people’s health behaviours.
Mr Ravunawa noted that 15 nightlife areas, particularly nightclubs in Suva, would be targeted as part of the campaign.
“The nightlife scene is an important part of urban culture, and it’s vital that health awareness is integrated into these social spaces,” he said.
“We will ensure condoms are readily available and promote responsible sexual behaviour among club-goers to foster a safer environment for both youths and adults.”
With these initiatives, the ministry aims to reduce the risk of disease transmission while promoting a culture of responsible sexual health practices in Fiji’s vibrant social settings.
