The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has cancelled and suspended the licences of five drivers caught engaging in reckless driving long Mead Road in Nabua.

This has sent a strong warning to all that unsafe behaviour on Fiji’s roads will not be tolerated by the authority.

LTA chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa said the drivers were recorded by members of the public last month dangerously overtaking other vehicles, putting motorists, passengers, and pedestrians at serious risk.

Three drivers had their licences cancelled for one year, while two others were suspended for six months.

“What we saw in that video was completely irresponsible and unacceptable. These drivers endangered innocent lives, and as the road safety authority, it is our duty to ensure roads are safe for everyone,” Mr Rokosawa said.

He added that while most Fijian drivers follow the rules, the actions of a few can have devastating consequences.

The authority also thanked members of the public for reporting reckless drivers, saying community vigilance is key to keeping roads safe.

Mr Rokosawa said the authority will continue showcase proceedings against drivers who ignore road safety rules.

Joint operations with the Fiji Police Force, including spot-checks, vehicle inspections, and speed monitoring, are underway to curb dangerous driving behaviours.

“Driving recklessly puts not only your life at risk but also the lives of innocent people. Speeding, overtaking on blind corners, driving under the influence, fatigue, and mobile phone distractions remain major causes of accidents in Fiji,” he said.

From January 1 to October 23, 2025, the LTA has cancelled 19 driver licences and suspended 48 others for repeated traffic offences. During the same period, the authority counselled 95 drivers and issued thousands of warnings for traffic violations.

Road fatalities in Fiji currently stand at 62 compared to 46 during the same period last year. The main causes remain speeding, dangerous overtaking, careless driving, and pedestrian negligence.
