Merewalesi Vakacegu Rodan believes that the Disability Gala Awards is an event that should have started years ago.

After being named the 2019 Wyndham Destinations Sportsperson of the Year at the inaugural gala awards night at the Holiday Inn, Suva last Saturday, the 51-year-old said there have been a lot of challenges for people living with disabilities.

“Government of today is showing great initiative to bring people like us in limelight,” Ms Rodan said.

“It’s good to know that people are becoming more aware. It's good to see the support.”

Ms Rodan suffered a spinal injury which left her paralysed from the age of 39.

The mother of six said she wants all women not to be disheartened because of disability.

“Nothing should stop them from achieving their goals.

“People with disability should come out of their comfort zone,” she said.

“We are looking at solutions to conquer disability.”
