Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya is calling for Fiji to follow Australia’s lead by introducing a ban on social media for children under 16, saying it is a necessary step to protect young people and empower parents.

“I further call for Fiji to follow suit what Australia has made law, a ban on social media to children under 16 as a measure to protect our children and empower parents,” Ms Tabuya said.

Her remarks were made in a statement marking World Children’s Day 2025, celebrated under the theme “My Day, My Rights.”

Fiji, she said, proudly joins the world in reaffirming its commitment to uphold the Convention on the Rights of the Child and ensure every child is protected, supported, and heard.

“This year’s theme, ‘My Day, My Rights,’ reminds us to give children the confidence and space to express themselves and shape their future. Our children are not just tomorrow’s leaders. They are the heartbeat of our communities today,” she said.

Ms Tabuya said children are increasingly vulnerable in a world of misinformation, drug use, discrimination, and rapidly evolving artificial intelligence, and that families and communities must work together to guide them.

As a mother of six, she stressed the importance of non-violent parenting.

“I firmly believe in positive discipline, not corporal punishment. Even the most difficult child can flourish when adults choose patience, guidance, and understanding. If it is a crime to hit an adult, it should also be a crime to hit a child.”

She urged all Fijians to unite against abuse, misinformation, disinformation, and cyberbullying.

“As Minister for Information, I call on all Fijians to stand united against abuse, misinformation, disinformation, and cyberbullying. Let us use technology to uplift, empower, and inspire our children.”

“Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and confident.”
