Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed yesterday she will table the Vuvale Union and Ocean of Peace Alliance treaties in the Australian Parliament next week.
Speaking in Suva yesterday, Ms Wong said she was “honoured and privileged” to begin the ratification process from Australia’s side, describing the agreements as “a new chapter” in Fiji-Australia relations.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed yesterday that Fiji’s Parliament would follow suit, saying Acting Attorney-General Siromi Turaga is ready to table the treaties in this month’s sitting.

Ms Wong said the Ocean of Peace Alliance grew directly from Mr Rabuka’s vision, which Pacific Islands Forum leaders later adopted. “Alliances are the greatest act of trust between two countries,” she said.
“They speak to our trust of each other and our recognition that we matter to each other.”
She said the treaty framework would be raised at today’s Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Ministers Meeting in Suva, which brought together all 18 Forum members ahead of next month’s Leaders Meeting in Palau.
“I hope we have the opportunity to speak with members of PIF about it, so we can talk through with them our vision and our commitments,” Ms Wong said.
