The death of the 39-year-old Fijian in Perth, Australia on Sunday has left his wife and four children here in Fiji in despair and in mourning.

Sikeli Nawaqa’s death made headlines in the Australian media yesterday after he was reported to be the driver of the vehicle that veered off the road slamming into a tree resulting in his demise.

He was from Nayawa in Nadroga with maternal links to Naceva, Beqa.

He was travelling with three other Fijian men who sustained injuries and were flown by helicopter to the Perth Hospital at around 7pm on Sunday.

Devastated wife Sulueti Naula, 37, said when she heard the news, she could only think about her four children that she was now left to care for on her own.

“A pastor they lived with in Perth, went to the hospital that morning, to get an update,” she said.

“After approximately two hours, I received a call from his boss.

“Just seeing the call from him, I instantly knew that it was about my husband. I couldn’t pick up the phone, I just sat in my bedroom, sobbing and crying.

“We only spoke on Saturday and we were making plans about getting our 18-year-old son to go abroad to continue his studies,” she said.

Nawaqa was among those who applied for work overseas through the National Employment Centre (NEC) under the Ministry of Employment two years ago.

He has been going in and out of the country progressing in his work.

He held the supervisor position at the Agri Fresh Citrus Farm before he passed away.

Ms Naula described her husband as a hardworking and a family man.

His father, Inoke Nawaqa, said the family was now making funeral arrangements.
