Raj Sharma has denied speculation that his resignation as Fiji Rice chairperson was linked to plans to contest Fiji’s upcoming general election.
Speaking at the company’s event in Labasa over the weekend, Mr Sharma said his family was his immediate priority, prompting him to step down from his voluntary role.
However, he will continue serving as chief executive officer of the Sugar Cane Growers Fund and board chairperson of Food Processors Fiji Pte Limited.

“I was brought in by the then Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu to assist Fiji Rice, which was formerly known as Rewa Rice Limited, with its rebranding in 2013,” Mr Sharma said.
“Under his leadership, I was also chairing three Government entities at that time to help, including rebranding Food Processors Pte Limited and Fiji Coconut Millers Pte Limited.”
The 60-year-old father of two, originally from Vunicuicui, Labasa, said his work over the years had required commitment and compassion.
“I am happy to resign after serving 13 years at Fiji Rice as I received numerous acknowledgements, including an email from the Prime Minister for my service,” he said.
“I am aware of the rumours circulating that my resignation has to do with my intention to join the election, but I can assure you this is not true.”
When asked why he had no plans to enter politics, he said: “I have done a lot of work for the people and Government by negotiating with ministers to bring changes for the benefit of the people while being outside Parliament.”
Mr Sharma confirmed he would retire after one more year of service with the companies where he is currently employed.
