Religious Organisations Back Ban On Mass Gathering

Religious organisations have instructed members to follow the Government’s advice.
This comes after the confirmation of Fiji’s first coronavirus COVID-19 case in Lautoka.
While outlining measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama announced a ban of major events and gatherings of 20 or more people.

The general secretary of the Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha, Vigyan Sharma, said they were calling on Hindus not to participate in the week-long Ram Naumi celebration, starting next Wednesday.
He said it was important to follow the instructions released by the Fijian Government on COVID-19.
Pundit Sharma also confirmed that the National Annual Convention which was scheduled during the Easter weekend in Nadi, and the Nasinu District annual general meeting scheduled for March 22, had been cancelled
“We will let the public know about cancelled events and we advise families to look after each other,” he said.
Fiji Muslim League president Hafizud Khan said the Government had made a decision on banning religious gatherings.
“This is for the safety of our citizens and I urge everyone to co-operate with their decisions,” he said.
Mr Khan said they had postponed events like council meetings, awards night and the annual inter-district competition.
Methodist Church of Fiji president Epineri Vakadewavosa said the church would make a statement today after meeting with church leaders.
