A Sarava family rebuilding their lives after losing their home to a fire in August has received farming support to restore stability.

The household in Sarava, Labasa, is set to improve its agricultural output after receiving a new rotovator from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.

The machine was officially handed over to Uttra Wati and Vijendra Dayal, enabling the family to adopt modern farming practices that will strengthen their livelihood and enhance long-term food security.

The mother of three described the gift as “like an early Christmas present,” bringing relief to her family after months of hardship.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways Inosi Kuridrani said the initiative demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to supporting rural communities.

“It demonstrates our continued support for farmers and the agriculture sector,” Mr Kuridrani said.

The rotovator is designed to break and prepare soil efficiently, producing fine seedbeds and enhancing crop establishment. By improving soil aeration and incorporating organic matter, it will help crops grow stronger and healthier throughout the growing season.

Mr Kuridrani highlighted the wider benefits of the technology.

“This rotovator will save time, reduce labour, and lower production costs,” he said.

He added the machine would allow farmers to cultivate more land in less time, increasing productivity and improving planting schedules.

He further noted the long-term national impact of such support.

“These outcomes will strengthen food security and support a resilient agriculture sector capable of feeding families and driving rural growth,” he said.

Mrs Wati expressed sincere appreciation for the assistance.

“This machine will make our work easier and give us hope for better harvests,” she said.

He also emphasised the alignment of the programme with national development goals.

“We aim to alleviate poverty through increased productivity and improved rural livelihoods,” he added.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farming families across Fiji as part of broader efforts to enhance food security, strengthen rural resilience, and uplift communities.
