Sisters Radhika and Devika Maharaj never thought that one day they would be graduating together. But yesterday, they both did just that, graduating from the Makoi Women Vocational Training Centre yesterday.

Despite the hardship, they vowed to always look after their mum, after their dad died when they were very young.

Radhika, 40, thanked the centre for giving them the opportunity to have a certificate under their name.

“I was in Class (Year) Eight when my father passed away, it was a big challenge for my family. My mother became the breadwinner for our family raising three children,” she said.

“It hurt me to see my mother struggle to put food on the table so I left school when I was in Form Five to help my mother.

“My friend told me about this centre and I decided to take up the caregiving course because of the opportunities.

“The knowledge and skills I have learned here will always be cherished. I am grateful to have been given an opportunity to be one of the graduates today.”

Devika said she was happy to be graduating with her older sister from the same course.

“I am overwhelmed and thankful that my mum is present with us today. This means a lot to my sister and I because my mum has always been there for us,” she said.

“All the sacrifices and struggles we went through was worth it because it has brought us this far and it has taught us to never give up despite the circumstances.”

The sisters hail from Sawani in Naitasiri.
