Opposition leader Inia Seruiratu has called on Government to address the ongoing delay in teacher salary payments, which has left many educators across Fiji in financial distress.

Mr Seruiratu said a significant number of new teachers have not received their salaries, despite the amount of time they’ve spent working.

He criticised the inefficiencies and procedural delays within the Ministry of Education as the root cause of the issue.

“Teachers form the backbone of society’s intellectual and moral development, and Government’s failure to release their salaries is unacceptable,” Mr Seruiratu said.

The delay has created severe financial hardship for teachers, many of whom are struggling to meet basic living expenses such as food, utility bills, and education costs for their children.

Mr Seruiratu said these were not merely professional concerns, but deeply personal ones that affect the wellbeing of teachers and their families.

“Many of these teachers have families who depend on their income to survive. The inability of teachers to meet their financial obligations creates an environment of distress that is both unsustainable and unfair.”

The Opposition is calling for immediate action to resolve the situation, urging Government to prioritise the release of pending salaries without further delay.
