The only bus company on Taveuni Island is once again considering suspending its service, citing poor road conditions among other reasons.

Taveuni Buses Pte Limited operations manager Prakash Sami said recently the bus drivers had been facing some difficulties in providing efficient bus services on the island.

“The road conditions are worse at the South of Taveuni, and our passengers are at high risk while travelling by bus,” Mr Sami said.

He has written complaints to Fiji Road Authority (FRA) in vain because there has been no improvement to public roads.

“Few bridges on the public roads are in critical condition and our bus has sustained damage while crossing,” he said.

“If these issues are not taken into consideration by authorities, then we will take other measures to combat the problems faced by our company for safety reasons.”

FRA Response

FRA in its email response stated that the South Coastal Road in Taveuni was part of their approved grading programme this month to September together with Salialevu Road and North Coastal Road.

It said the network was accessible and will continue to monitor the rainfall periods which affected their progress on site.

For the bridges, the FRA has attended to the loose, damaged, and missing planks at Nalele Bridge.

It is anticipating the full timber deck replacement for Nalele Bridge by September/October 2023.
