Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna says the Government is aware that rising fuel prices will affect sugarcane farmers, harvesting operations and transportation costs.

He said global factors such as ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions continue to impact fuel prices and transport costs worldwide.

Speaking in Parliament last week in Suva, Mr Tunabuna reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting sugarcane farmers in managing the rising costs of harvesting and transport.

“The ministry has implemented a range of targeted programmes, grants and subsidies to reduce production costs and sustain farmer livelihoods,” he said.

“The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) continues to provide a fuel rebate of up to 10 cents per litre for transport operators and harvester owners.”

He said existing subsidies and farmer incentives will continue to ensure readiness for the upcoming harvesting season.

“The sugar industry remains vital to our economy, and the Coalition Government is fully committed to its revival and long-term sustainability,” he said.

He urged farmers, contractors and industry stakeholders to work collaboratively to manage the impact of rising fuel costs.
