University of the South Pacific Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Pal Ahluwalia will conclude his tenure on September 1.

USP Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council Siosiua 'Utoikamanu made the announcement this morning.

Professor Ahluwalia was appointed to the position in 2019 and led the university through significant challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Appointed in 2019, Professor Ahluwalia, with the support of the University's management team, staff, and students, has led USP through a period of significant challenges, including the global COVID-19 pandemic," Mr 'Utoikamanu said.

A defining moment of Professor Ahluwalia’s tenure came earlier this year, when staff across the region staged strike action over unresolved log of claims and cost-of-living concerns.

The industrial action exposed deepening tensions between management and employee unions, centred on longstanding grievances and delayed resolutions.

Although the strike was eventually settled through mediation, it raised concerns about internal governance and communication within the university.

During his tenure, the university maintained teaching and research continuity despite financial and operational pressures.

A major achievement under Professor Ahluwalia's leadership was the successful reaffirmation of accreditation by the WASC Senior College and University Commission, which validated the quality of USP's academic programmes.

The university also entered major global university rankings for the first time, including the Times Higher Education and WURI rankings, reflecting its growing reputation for research excellence and innovation.

The council will commence the process for appointing a new Vice-Chancellor and President, with interim management arrangements to ensure smooth transition.

"On behalf of the Council and the University community, I extend our thanks to Professor Ahluwalia for his service and leadership and wish him every success in his future endeavours," Mr 'Utoikamanu said.
