A 53-year-old worker died after a vehicle veered off the road and hit him while he was working at a borehole in Raviravi, Ba, on Friday.

Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu said the incident happened at about 3.30pm on Friday.

“A vehicle driven by a 24-year-old man veered off the road and bumped the 54-year-old man, an off-site operator of Ba, who was working on the borehole with his team,” Mr Bautolu said.

Mr Kumar was taken to Ba Hospital and later transferred to Lautoka Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He was a former employee of Vatukoula Gold Mines.

G Nadan Drilling manager Vinal Nadan described Mr Kumar as a loyal and hardworking employee.

“He was a very hardworking man and focused on his work. He will be missed,” Mr Nadan said.

A family member said the family was still coming to terms with his death and requested privacy.

Mr Kumar is survived by his wife and two children.

Police investigations continue.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday.
