Women are transforming Fiji’s construction industry, with more than 200 professionals now united under Women in Construction and Trade Fiji (WICAT), as the organisation launched its official website this week.

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, commended WICAT at the launch event yesterday, describing the movement as a powerful force advancing women’s participation in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

“What began as a small group of determined women in 2021 has grown into a national movement,” she said. “You have created a space where women are visible, valued, and connected.”

WICAT now represents tradeswomen, engineers, architects, project managers, contractors, suppliers, and entrepreneurs across Fiji.

Over the past five years, the organisation has hosted three consecutive Women in Construction Week celebrations, built strategic business partnerships, and advocated for gender inclusion in procurement and skilled trades.

Its founder, Julianne Verma, said the movement is grounded in collaboration rather than competition.

“Our journey is not about competing with men or trying to be men; it’s about working alongside our male counterparts at the same table, making decisions together to move the industry forward,” Ms Verma said.

The Minister also recognised Ms Verma’s international representation, confirming she will speak at the Sydney Build 2026 Expo in April at the International Convention Centre Sydney, highlighting the achievements of Pacific Island women in construction.

This year’s theme, “Level Up, Build Strong,” reflects what Ms Kiran described as true nation-building — not only constructing homes and infrastructure, but shaping a more inclusive and resilient Fiji.

The newly launched website will serve as a national directory of women-led businesses, connect members to opportunities, and strengthen collaboration with government and private sector partners.

Ms Kiran reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering women across all sectors, encouraging WICAT members to continue breaking barriers and building strong foundations for future generations.
