Newly-appointed Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) general secretary Simione Rasova has pledged to strengthen the party’s internal structures and prepare for the next general election.

He believes the general election could be held as early as next year.

Mr Rasova’s appointment was confirmed during the party’s management board meeting following its Annual General Meeting at Tamavua Village Hall last Saturday. He said members approved key agenda items to advance SODELPA’s work.

“We had a very informative meeting today. The management board approved most of the things that were laid out for us to achieve, including the formation of committees to strengthen our work,” Mr Rasova said.

The party has endorsed the establishment of several committees, including fundraising, human resources, and a team to prepare submissions to Cabinet and Parliament. Among these is a proposed committee to review electoral reform, an issue Mr Rasova said had long been on the party’s agenda.

“Back in 2004, SODELPA made submissions on electoral reform. We will build on that and make sure our positions are properly represented,” he said.

Mr Rasova reaffirmed SODELPA’s commitment to the Coalition Government following a recent Supreme Court opinion affirming the 2013 Constitution as the supreme law.

“Even though our party had supported recognition of the 1997 Constitution, we abide by the coalition decision to support the court’s ruling. We stand united with our partners,” he said.

With SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka overseas and senior ministers attending official duties in New Zealand and Vanuatu, Mr Rasova said the Deputy Prime Minister’s presence at the meeting reaffirmed confidence in the party’s direction.

Mr Rasova, who previously served as acting campaign director in 2006 and contested elections in 2014 and 2018, said his experience had prepared him for the new role.

“My application was based on wanting to serve the party in all regards. With my experience, I felt I could take on this role. I am thankful for the board’s endorsement,” Mr Rasova said.

He also acknowledged ongoing criticism of SODELPA on social media but urged members to stay focused.
