Over the next three years, Fiji Ports Corporation Limited plans to invest over $1 million on sustainable initiatives.

This is after FPCL achieved 11 percent average reduction of Green House Gas emissions over the past five years.

The company had achieved GHG emissions reductions through several energy efficiency upgrades that were implemented.

These energy efficiency upgrades included LED lighting, solar PV systems, and replacement of diesel-powered incinerator with an electric incinerator to reduce its carbon footprint.

Chief executive officer Vajira Piyasena intends to further reduce FPCL’s carbon footprint by 220 tonnes of carbon emissions in the coming years.

His goal for FPCL is to reach carbon neutral status by 2027.

“Fiji Ports have implemented an “energy tracker” and dashboard to monitor its progress in achieving the intended goals,” Mr Piyasena said.

“Since 2016, we have invested significantly on sustainable initiatives that we have delivered, and their positive implications are shown in our Green Port Dashboard and Energy Tracker.

Some of the completed green initiatives implemented include:

  • Green and Sustainable Practices: Implemented green purchasing guidelines and incorporated the NSW green port development guide into major projects.
  • Energy and Efficiency: Completed LED lighting specifications, upgraded energy efficiency at Mua-i-walu House, and instituted scheduled air conditioner servicing.
  • Training and Reporting: Conducted eco-driver training and completed data collection and reporting on greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Water Management: Undertook water line tracing to identify leaks and completed tracking upgrades for fuel and water usage.

Recently, FPCL won the Green Sustainability Award at the Fiji Business Excellence Awards which reflected on the company’s investment in sustainability.

Mr Piyasena said the award validated the sustainability efforts, put into ensuring that all FPCL practices aligned with sustainable and environmentally friendly principles.

“This award acknowledges the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint, promoting eco-friendly operations, and embracing sustainability.

“The Green Sustainability Award 2023 has enhanced our motivation for continued Improvement.

“The recognition reinforces FPCL’s efforts in sustainability and encourages the company to continue implementing innovative eco-friendly solutions and practices.”
