A local shipping company has threatened to suspend its services unless the Government urgently addresses long-standing concerns over the employment conditions of seafarers.
Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) says the issue remains unresolved despite months of discussions with relevant authorities.
Managing director George Goundar said operators had repeatedly called for seafarers to be protected under internationally recognised standards covering working conditions, training and certification.

He said the dispute centred on the regulatory framework governing seafarer employment and the need for authorities to comply with maritime laws and conventions designed to protect workers.
Mr Goundar also criticised what he described as instability within the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), citing frequent changes in leadership over the years.
He questioned why a permanent local chief executive had not been appointed, listing a succession of chief executives and acting chief executives who had led the authority.
Mr Goundar claimed political influence had undermined the authority and turned MSAF into a political battleground.
Having worked in the maritime industry for nearly 50 years, he said his concerns were driven by a commitment to protecting the sector and ensuring compliance with the law.
Asked who should be held responsible if shipping services were suspended, Mr Gourndar said accountability rested with the Government.
MSAF acting chief executive Sereana Lalakobau said consultations on the matter had yet to take place and questions would be addressed afterwards.
Mr Goundar urged passengers and the public to raise their concerns with authorities, maintaining that his position was not politically motivated.
“I don’t belong to any party at all. I’m a freelancer and I’m here to serve the people. But I won’t be bullied,” he said.
