Tourism initiatives and projects should be decentralised across the country so rural communities can benefit, instead of development being concentrated in major towns and cities.

That was the message delivered by the director of Ideal Bed & Breakfast and Ideal Drawa Eco Retreat, Mary Wye Qiqi, during the opening of the Drawa eco-tourism retreat in Drawa, Wailevu, Cakaudrove, today.

Ms Qiqi said the eco-tourism project was built on a shared vision from village elders who wanted to create sustainable income opportunities while preserving their identity and culture.

“We believe tourism should not only benefit cities and large resorts. Tourism can also uplift rural communities,” she said.

Ms Qiqi said employment opportunities would be created through adventure trekking and historical site visits, with tourists paying fees to access the services.

She said sustainable tourism development in Drawa would help change mindsets in rural communities by showing that income could be generated from local resources if developed effectively.

Ms Qiqi also said the tourism project could help improve poor road conditions leading to Drawa Village, easing transportation challenges for villagers.

She said better road access would also assist farmers transporting root crops to nearby markets and towns.

Commercial plans for sustainability

The project also aims to raise funds to invest in commercial buildings and rental properties to create long-term income streams for villagers and support future development projects.

Ms Qiqi said the initiative was not just a business venture, but a pathway towards self-reliance, empowerment and economic security for the community.

She encouraged other villages to explore eco-tourism opportunities to improve village welfare and income generation.
