Students must choose discipline, responsibility, and respect to secure their future, says Divisional Police Commander Western, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa.
Officiating at the Tilak High School prefects’ induction last Friday, SSP Vaisewa delivered a strong message on youth behaviour, leadership, and national responsibility.
SSP Vaisewa said the foundations for success were simple: discipline, respect, responsibility, and dedication.

“Your future matters to us. Your life matters to us,” he said.
He cautioned students against being drawn into harmful activities, referring to the recent student brawl at the Lautoka Bus Stand.
“We tend to be attracted to the wrong activities without realising the consequences. I challenge you to be the one who walks away and says, ‘No, I will not get involved’,” he said.
Leadership
SSP Vaisewa told the students that leadership was not about authority, but accountability.
“Being a leader is more than giving orders. It is about accountability to others and yourself. You must walk the talk,” he said.
He urged prefects to lead by example, respect differing opinions, and uphold school values.
“Every day you wear that badge, remember the responsibility you carry in serving your school community.”
Addressing parents, SSP Vaisewa called for greater involvement in their children’s lives.
“Our children need more of our time. Our presence is more effective than a phone or laptop,” he said.
He added that simple actions — such as ensuring punctuality, homework, and proper uniform — reflected parental commitment.
“If we want them to achieve more, we must invest more time in them. Let us work together to protect our children’s well‑being. Stay focused on your education, and do not let poor decisions ruin your future,” he said.
