Nadi-based fisherman Alinesh Ram says precautionary measures are vital to protect boats when natural disasters threaten.

Since midday yesterday, he has been stationed with a team at the Denarau River mouth, looking after three speedboats used mainly for game fishing. The vessels are owned by Malolo Fisher Sports.

A heavy rain warning, a flash flood warning and a strong wind warning is in place for Fiji as the centre of Category 3 Tropical Cyclone Vaianu continues to track between Fiji and Vanuatu.

Mr Ram, 44, said the Denarau River mouth had long served as a safe shelter for yachts and boats during cyclones.

“Precaution is very important,” he said.

“We came on Monday midday and will remain here. We will assess conditions on Wednesday and, if the weather improves, return to the dock to secure the boats.”

The father of three has spent 25 years in the fishing industry and says he still enjoys the work.

“I like the job very much. I meet new people, experience different languages, cultures, and cuisines, and learn a lot through game fishing,” Mr Ram said.

He said he previously worked in a motor spare parts shop but left because the work became repetitive.

Meanwhile, larger cruises vessels are taking shelter at Vitogo Bay in Lautoka.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) said it remains focused on the safety of personnel, protecting Fiji’s marine environment, and ensuring recovery efforts are carried out safely.

All maritime transport involving passengers and cargo in the Western Division has been ordered to cease as TC Vaianu intensifies.

MSAF said the suspension took effect from 9am today due to gale-force winds affecting the region.
