The $19.5m project of the Damodar City Aquatic Centre and the National Hockey Centre was reopened yesterday.
It would be an advantage for Fiji as they bid to host the 2031 Pacific Games, says Fiji Sports Council executive chairman Gilbert Vakalalabure.
The two projects which started in 2022 were funded by the government of the People’s Republic of China.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka unveiled the two refurbished sporting venues after it was handed over by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji Zhou Zian.
“The council is committed in the power of sport; I’m looking forward in fostering collaboration particularly with the nation of the People’s Republic of China.
“This partnership was key in the realisation of our facilities in setting new standards.
The two projects were completed in October last year and awaited the availability of the Prime Minister.
He acknowledged the tremendous support and work done to upgrade the two facilities.
The 2031 Pacific Games host is yet to be confirmed; Fiji was one of the six countries that has shown interest to host the Games.
