At the age of 21, Jasmine Daunakamakama has etched her name into Fiji’s sporting history after becoming the country’s first woman to win a boxing medal at the Commonwealth Games.
The Lomanikoro, Bau, Tailevu, lass claimed the historic bronze medal win for Team Fiji at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games after reaching the semi-final of the women’s 57kg featherweight division.
Daunakamakama secured her place on the podium with a determined quarterfinal victory over Sri Lanka’s Keshani Hansika. She put up a good fight against defending champion Michaela Walsh of Northern Ireland in the semi-final.
Despite the defeat, the bronze medal stands as one of the biggest achievements in the history of Fiji boxing and women’s sport.
The milestone is the latest chapter in a career filled with groundbreaking achievements.
In 2024, Daunakamakama became the first Fijian female boxer to compete at an Olympic qualifying tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, on the road to the Paris Olympic Games, opening doors for future generations of women in the sport.
Her outstanding performances also earned her a nomination for the Sportswoman of the Year award at the 2024 Fiji Sports Awards, while she captured the 2024 Golden Gloves Championship title.
