Plans are in the pipeline to cut sevens preparations costs for both women and men national sides.
This means there will be no more camps at various resorts and other locations.
Fiji Rugby Union trust board interim chairman Peter Mazey made the statement during a press conference at Rugby House yesterday where the interim trustees addressed several FRU issues. On the same Mazey said there would not be any reduction in the FIJI Water Flying Fijians preparatory budget for the Rugby World Cup (RWC) in France in September.
“For the RWC we are not looking at cost cutting, we’re gotta win. We’ve a got bonuses budgeted if they get to the final,” Mazey said.
“For HSBC sevens we will work on budget cuts,” he said.
“It’s quite hard to send all our players into camps for long times, for camps held in tourist resorts which cost $25k a week; we can’t afford that.”
Instead they will consider how the Fijian Drua players find their own accommodation before training.
Interim trustee Jenny Seeto revealed that the Fijian men’s sevens team was operating on a $1.5 million loss.
Proper budgeting was one of the key areas highlighted by the trustees yesterday which they would like to rectify in taking the Rugby House forward.
