Defending Coca-Cola Games girls champions Adi Cakobau School is all set for today’s Triple N Zone at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The Triple N Zone competition was earlier cancelled as the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Finals, commonly known as the Coca-Cola Games date was not confirmed by the Ministry of Education. This saw ACS participate in the Tailevu Zone as a guest school.
In an earlier interview, zone delegate Alivereti Tawake said that 10 schools have confirmed its participation.
“If all schools are present, then we can go up to 18 participating schools at the zone meet,” Tawake said.
“Schools like Vunimono High School and Baulevu have not participated in the zone for some years. We awaited for confirmation from the ministry to lock in our date.”
The Triple N Zone involves secondary schools in the Naitasiri, Nausori and Nasinu areas.
The Coca-Cola Games will be on August 18-20 in Suva.
National athletics coach Albert Miller said this would be an interesting Coca-Cola Games since it is the first one after a two-year lapse because of COVID-19.
Also, Miller says, rugby dominated schools like Ratu Kadavulevu School, Queen Victoria School and Lelean Memorial School are going to struggle in fielding a formidable athletics squads.
This is because the Vodafone Deans Trophy and Weet-Bix Raluve Championships are also held almost at the same time.
This year’s games will be an interesting tussle with Suva Grammar School looking to end RKS and Adi Cakobau School’s reign.
Two weeks from the annual meet, schools like Marist Brothers High School, Natabua High School, Jasper Williams High School, Queen Victoria High School, Xavier College are quietly going on with their preparation.
Outside Viti Levu schools like Namosi High School and Tavua College who always dominate middle and long distance events are often the surprise package in the competition.
Meanwhile, several secondary schools in Vanua Levu are reconsidering their coming over to Suva because of the high costs of travelling and accommodating their athletes while in Suva.
The teachers who asked not to be named indicated that they are monitoring the situation before a decision is made by their respective principals.
