It’s after a 13-year lapse the Fiji Bitter Wailevu rugby side have won the Macuata Rugby Union’s Sigadamu a Vanua Shield after walloping Breakthrough 33-21 in the final yesterday.

Wailevu coach Isoa Rokobici said the last time they had won the shield was in 2006.

“We really prepared well and played to our best throughout the game that led to our win,” he said.

“I’m very thankful to players for putting up a good performance.

“I acknowledge the almighty Gold for being our source of strength, our supporters, sponsor Fiji Bitter and Joe Rodan (Snr) for believing in us.”

Regarded as the most fittest team in the competition, Breakthrough coach Apenisa Tuicati said despite the loss they have ended the season on a high note.

“I would like to thank God for the long journey that has ended well today despite our loss and being dished two yellow cards but we’re still happy that in our second year in joining the Macuata Rugby Union we’re able to reach the final.

“This is our second year in the competition and we’ve reached the final. “Our main area of preparation was on discipline and for the boys to maintain that throughout the season by simply guarding their heart.

“We’ll come back well prepared next year.”

Macuata Rugby Union President Usaia Turagaivalu said they have ended their season well.

”The prize money came from the gate takings of our weekly challenge matches where we managed to collect about $5,000.

“We’ll continue to plan out our strategies for the next four years.

“On behalf of the Macuata Rugby Union I would like to thank our supporters for coming out in numbers to back our weekly competitions.”
