Amateur boxing competition in Suva resumes at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym (old PWD Gym) in Walu Bay, Suva, this Saturday.
This was confirmed yesterday by Fiji Amateur Boxing Association (FABA) treasurer and club competition chair, Ana Ledua.
FABA president, Manasa Baravilala, said this was after having independently assessed to ensure they are compliant with the requirements of the, Resumption of Sports Framework.
He said FABA was issued its 2021 Safe Sports Fiji certificate last week.
FABA officials are confident that there will be a hive of activity on Saturday with clubs eager to compete following the long stoppage brought on by COVID -19.
Ledua said they expect a good turnout from clubs in the Navua to Nausori corridor including Western clubs from Ra, Ba, Vatukoula, Lautoka, Nadi, Sigatoka and Navosa.
“We expect a big turnout due to the long lockdown and long layoff so most boxers are long overdue for a box off.”
Amateur boxing has produced many of the country’s top boxers like Alipate Korovou, Sakaraia Ve, Anthony Naidu and the list goes on.
Also, in the country at his own expenses is former FABA executive and ring official Seru Whippy of Australia.
The former FABA president, mentor and trainer and the country’s only accredited IBA Star 3 Referee and Judge, will conduct a refresher seminar for referees, judges and coaches prior to the competition on Saturday
