The Republic of Fiji Military Forces women’s team is making their debut at the International Defence championship in New Zealand next month.

The 27-member squad is coached by Sireli Ledua.

Speaking to SUNsports team manager Captain Ana Vuniwaqa said the championship has set the ground for their preparation for the end of the year Ratu Sukuna Bowl competition.

“It has been mentioned last year that women rugby will be also included in this year’s Sukuna Bowl, this championship is good preparation for us for that,” Vuniwaqa said.

“Rugby is culture in Fiji, to be invited to play at this level is a bonus, as it sets the ground work for our preparation for the Sukuna Bowl.

“The tournament is schedule for the whole of October we are going to leave either on the first or second day of October.

“We started training two months ago at the Queen Elizabeth Barracks; we marched into camp at the Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa last week.

While Ledua is head coach, assistant coach is Josaia Mataki. Back line coach is Manueli Gade and the Strength and conditioning coach is Emosi Naivalu.

“The girls have been going through some tough training sessions this week.”

Meanwhile sponsor of the side, Flour Mills of Fiji general manager Anuj Patel has urged them to make the country proud.

“Go out there and stamp your mark in the tournament just like the men’s team,” Patel said.

“FMF is always and will be with you all the way with the nations support.
