The Fiji Secondary School Rugby League has recorded the biggest number of participating teams this year.

This was revealed by acting FSSRL president, Naisa Cama Toko yesterday.

The secondary school league will begin with the zone semifinals this Saturday.

Garvey Park, Tavua will host the Western zone semis while the South Eastern zone will be held at St Marcellin Primary School grounds.

The Under-19 grade in the South Eastern zone will have its final round of pool games on Saturday.

“This year we recorded the largest number, 87 participating teams altogether that is a record, and not mentioning the women’s competition,” he said.

“16 women’s teams are in the South Eastern zone and four teams in the West, so 107 teams, that is a milestone achievement.”

The women’s state of origin game will be held during the grand finale, where the Western selection team will meet the South Eastern zone selection. Two teams will battle for the Daunivalu trophy.

Toko also applauded the Fiji Bati 50-member squad selection where two under-19 players, Marika Turagaiviu and Joeli Baleilevuka, were named.

“We have two members of the 50 squad who were part of the Under-19 last year, not mentioning the huge numbers who went through the competition like Bill Kikau, Tui Kamikamica and the list goes on.

“So this competition is the nursery for our national team.”

Meanwhile, the national quarterfinals will be held on June 18 at Garvey Park, Tavua and Tavua College.

The national semifinals and finals will be held at Ratu Cakobau Park on June 25 and July 2 respectively.

Nasinu Secondary School Panthers are the U15 and U19 defending champions while Ratu Kadavulevu School Eeels is the defending U17 winners.
