The Ministry of Youth and Sports has stepped in to temporarily postpone all boxing promotions until further notice.

Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Youth and Sports Jone Maretino has confirmed that they are in collaboration with the Boxing Commission of Fiji directors in ensuring that a proper operational management board is in order.

“We’re currently working with the Boxing Commission of Fiji on sorting out the issue of hosting professional boxing matches,” Maretino said.

“So we are trying to make sure that the Commission is to have a full board first and to also ensure that they have proper management operational.

“At the moment we’ve only two board members that are operating and as a board member or official we want to make sure there is a demarcation of the roles when people are officiating during boxing matches which we don’t have at the moment.

“We also have the board members, ring supervisors and referees doing the job at the same time and that are not appropriate for boxing so we want to make sure we get our organisation organised before we move forward.

“Yes, we like the fact that we are coming together as stakeholders and partners with the Boxing Commission ensuring that we commit by the roles as at the end of the day as its the boxers that need to benefit.

“We also don’t want the incident happening in a boxing promotion in Nadi to be repeated,”
