The early arrival of the Fiji Airways Fiji men’s rugby seven team to Vancouver in Canada paid off when they walloped Spain 31-14 in their pool opener.

“We came here (Vancouver) two weeks before the tournament so we could adapt to the cold weather,” said halfback Pilipo Bukayaro.

He said despite not winning the past 17 tournaments in the HSBC SVNS Series, they have been working hard with the aim to get better in every game they play.

“We’re working towards defending the Olympic Games gold medal,” Bukayaro added.

Rover Ponipate Loganimasi scored a hat-trick of tries in the win followed by tries to Bukayaro and Terio Tamani.

Captain Napolioni Bolaca landed two conversions while Tamani converted his own try.

Meanwhile, the Fijiana women’s sevens side went down 21-17 to USA in their opening pool match.

Both teams scored three tries each with USA converting all their tries while the Fijians managed only once conversion.

The Fijiana tries were scored by Reapi Ulunisau, Raijeli Daveua and Ilisapeci Delawau with Ana Maria Naimasi kicking over one conversion.
