Canada 7s: Fijians Target To Top Pool B

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber has had serious discussions with the players on the need to be positive and maintain a ‘winning culture’.

This will have to start at the Canada 7s in Van­couver, which gets underway tomorrow.

“Winning one tournament and losing another one is an issue and yes, I have discussed it with the players,” he said.

“Our lineout was good, our contact area was good but we were shaky in defence and also with our discipline.

“The players have got a warning in terms of yellow cards. We keep on talking about disci­pline and there is a process for some of these boys. Some of them have learnt it.”

The Fijians are grouped alongside Samoa, Kenya and hosts Canada in Pool B.

“All three teams are tough but we got to show respect to everybody. We have to get three wins in the pool games and progressed through to the quarterfinals.

“Do what we need to do, home team Canada who will have a huge support gathering in Van­couver as we speak will be physical,” Baber said.

“Consistency is currently a struggle for the team. Our aim was to win the series we have won two tournaments and still got five to play and what makes it difficult now is the consist­ency.

“USA has been a consistent side in this series, they’re playing well but we have to believe that we have the mentality to win this tournament.”
