Fiji National Sports Commission chairman Peter Mazey highlighted the need for changes in administrative matters for all sporting federations in order to protect them and their athletes.
“Some are under the company act and some under the charity act so that is good since there is protection within those,” he said.
“But there is no protection within the general structure, not for our members, our athletes and for our organisation.”
Mazey said they need to get that addressed and that was why they had the conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva yesterday.
“We may have to go back to the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum to see how best we can do this and maybe a new sports act will be needed.
“The government has put funding aside this year for us to go back and see how we should best administer our sports. So we are very lucky that the Minister of Economy gave us the grant.”
Mazey said they would be having dialogue with other sporting federations on how they would be going about it.
Another possibility he highlighted was that some small sporting federations could very well be led by a single person.
“All of this will be included in to our new national sports policy or sports and physical activity policy and this is most probably the most important press conference we have ever had,” Mazey added.
