The new sports facility at Malawai, Nadi, will have a positive impact on the community as it will promote health and wellbeing.
It would also identify sportspeople who will represent Fiji in the future.
Minister for Youth and Sports Parveen Kumar Bala made the comment during the official opening of the Malawai Volleyball Court in Nadi on Friday.
Bala thanked the Chinese Government for funding the project which was worth $80,000.
“This will bring much needed peace of mind to all Fijians in this area with the availability of a top class facility,” he said.
“The facility is intended for sports like volleyball, badminton and other wellness programmes.
“The new facility will also be an income-generating opportunity for the youths and the community in hosting sporting events.
“With sports as an enabler, the Fiji and China relationship has been made stronger moving forward during this COVID-19 period.”
Chinese ambassador Qian Bo said Fiji is China’s first bilateral partner in the Pacific.
He added China and Fiji shared an excellent history and have become family friends.
He added in the past years there were a lot of initiatives from both sides collaborating in the area of youth and sports development.
“This project signifies the clear demonstration of the strong support for the Fiji community and its youth development,” he said.
“Through sports, young people will be able to find better jobs and good education to come out of poverty.”
