Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro officially unveiled the Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) College Under-14 rugby team on Friday.

Speaking to SUNsport, CMF College principal Maikeli Benaca said for this year the school has set its sights on extra-curricular activities.

“We are happy with our one silver medal from the Coke Games and we hope to improve next year,” Benaca said.

“We are now preparing our first two rugby teams, the Under-14 and Under-16 to compete in the Southern Zone competition.”

The birth of the CMF rugby teams was inspired by the CMF church as the school currently has a two year plan to include an U18 team to compete for the Vodafone Deans Trophy.

“We plan to have the Under-16 this year and by 2025 we’ll be in the Under-18 category. However, since we have four streams of Year 9 and majority of the students came from CMF primary, the parents wanted their children to play and with their support. The parents are committed to look for sponsors and we were able to include an Under-14 team as well.”

The faith based school is looking forward to two friendly matches during the two-week break before the Southern Zone competition begins in week 1.

“We believe, we will give good competition to the prominent schools in the Southern Zone since the current Deans champion is also from the zone.

Manav Ram of the Roman Uniform and Design has come forward to sponsor 38 pair of jerseys for the CMF U14 team.

“One set has four pieces, a jersey, shorts, pair of socks and vest. The parents wanted all the 38 children to have a jersey each, which they will use for the Ubder-14 and Under-15 next year,” Ram said.

Benaca urged the need to have every child to showcase their talent in sports.

“I’m encouraging all principals that are still thinking to have their school participate in the competition. Not all children are academy inclined. The role of the head of school is to provide extra-curricular activities not only athletics but rugby, soccer and netball as Fiji is a sporting country,” he added.
