The Kiribati High Commission stepped in last week to assist Saint John’s College athletes with their preparation for the 2022 Coke Games that will be held in Suva on August 18-20.
High Commissioner Tebuai Uaai, gave $3100 to team manager Shonal Butturu on Saturday.
The money will purchase track shoes for the athletes.
“We were grateful to be invited to Kiribati High Commission on Saturday to receive their kind donation,” Butturu said.
SJC from Ovalau took part in 2019 Coke Games; the team won 1 gold medal (400m - senior boys) and 1 bronze (4x400m senior boys).
“We are bringing 50 athletes to the Coca Cola Games in August; this donation will make a difference as athletes now have running shoes to assist them in the competition,” he said.
“The challenge faced by the school team is that there is a lack of competition as SJC was one of the two schools that took part in the Lomaiviti zone this year.
“The athletes apart from their schoolwork are preparing well for this year’s Coke Games.”
