More than 40 athletes are expected to participate in the Commonwealth Games trials at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium on Saturday.
National athletics coach Albert Miller said yesterday the trials would be a good opportunity for the athletes to gauge their performance and track their progress.
“We are monitoring our athletes in the US (United States) as there’s a few of them doing very well,” he said.

“I think Rusi Matai and Waisele Inoke are proving themselves as worthy contenders but it’s going to be a long process and we wish everybody well.”
Miller was hopeful that a few athletes can achieve the qualifying standards and represent Fiji at the commonwealth games.
“We are hoping that we’ll attract other athletes who may be vying for a spot on the team but not on the original list,” he said.
“I think there is still an opportunity for anybody who can come and prove themselves to be on the final team list.”
Miller added that there was interest shown by Fijian athletes based in Australia.
“The door is open for anyone that is interested. The only advise I can tell them (athletes) is to attend the trials especially if you’re locally based.”
Miller said the athletes would need to achieve the qualifying standards to book a spot on the team. The open men’s and women’s 5000m will be the first event of the trials, which start at 9am.
